About Johannes Lodewicus Andreas Van Der Merwe
My great grandfather Johannes Lodewicus Andries Van Der Merwe served in the Anglo Boer War and 1 June 1926 was posted at Wonderfontein where they were guarding the bridge. After his shift around midnight he took the train to Belfast to go and rest before his next shift. It was mid winter and freezing cold. He fell asleep on the train and woke up almost too late to get off the train at Belfast station where he needed to get off. He jumped off at the same time when the door slammed closed, the door pinched his trench-coat and dragged him to the end of the station platform where his coat came undone. He was badly injured and crawled back to the station building where he sat down on a bench. There was no one on duty that time of the night. His injuries and the freezing cold night took his life. He was found in the morning. He was buried on the farm Vogelstuispoort near Belfast
