About Gerretjen Cornelise Newkirk
Gerritjen was baptized 4 April 1714 at the Old Dutch Church in Kingston, New York. Her parents were Barent Nieuw-kerk and Rebekke Van Buntschooten. Witnesses and Sponsors were Theius Eliasz and Marretjen a Buntschooten.[1]
There is confusion whether her nickname was Jean or Jane. She reportedly married a Hoagland (possibly Jacobus or John) and was named in her father's will as "Jean Hogland". [2] The will gives her 20 shillings. In addition, adding to the confusion, the will also names Barent's grand-daughter "Martha Boon" leaving her 20 shillings. This legacy has led some researchers to suggest "Jean" was married first to a Boone.
.........The name controversy shows other researchers have interpreted her name as Jane, wife of John Hoagland. In 2006 researcher Curt Sytsma stated: Jane married John Hoagland; her sister, Jemina married John's brother, Henry. Documentary evidence includes at least four references to Jean or Jane Newkirk. The 1764 will of Barent Newkirk[5] and 1782 intestate records in Washington County, PA naming "Jean" widow of John Hoaghland.[6] however a 1794 Pension [7] and 1799 Probate record identify her as Jane.
