He was born in Kristiansand on March 14, 1684, and died in Øjestad in
1723. He was the first Kjærulf of the Kristiansand line to study for
the clergy. At that time anyone in Norway who wanted to be admitted
to an institution of higher education had to travel to Copenhagen.
Antonius Mortensen began studying in 1703, received his degree in
theology in 1707, amd in 1710 was appointed pastor for Hyllested and
Vendeslev of the Sorø district in Denmark. He wanted to return to
Norway, however, and in 1715 he applied for the position as pastor
for Øjestad, not, as he wrote, "for any reasons of worldly advantage,
but so that I can more easily comfort my grieving mother, who is now
a widow." He did not receive the position at that time.
In 1716 he received a "Magistergrad" (today, approximately equal to a
doctorate in the U.S.), and the same year he was "called" to the
pastorate at South Øjestad, arriving there in 1717. In 1720 he became
"prost" (pastor in charge of several parishes in an area) for Nedenes.
He was married in Denmark in 1716 to Margrethe Numsen, who was born
in 1680 and died in 1727, the daughter of Major Corfitz Numsen and
his wife, the widow of the former pastor of Hyllested and Vendslev,
Henning Jacobsen Achton.
It is said that Antonius Mortensen Kierulff "was a poor spouse and
his wife a conceited spendthrift, for which reason they were
constantly troubled by financial difficulties."
Antonius Mortensen Kierulff and Margrethe Numsen had only two
children (listed in the Norwegian text).
He married Margrethe Numsen, daughter of Corfitz Numsen, 1711. Born
1680. Died 1727.
